My niece and I watch movies together.
She loves tragedies and violent ones.
She doesn’t enjoy romantic films or comedies.
Whenever somebody dies or some other tragedy occurs,
whenever there is a breakup—divorce or separation,
whenever there is a fight between the hero and the villains,
whenever there is death and destruction,
she cries with all her might, sobs, and sometimes screams.
I try to hide my tears in some scenes, but
she wails quite unabashedly, as if she is watching the movies to cry.
She even comes prepared with a towel to mop her tears.
Once I asked why she watches scenes that make her cry.
She told me that crying is therapeutic, that it clears her mind.
I don’t know if it is true, but I should try it next time we are watching.
