Petrarchan Sonnet 2 – Darkness Undone

I cried with overwhelming, sudden joy.
She held me close and quietly began to weep.
Her eyes were bright like oceans, dark and deep—
She was with child, a bliss without alloy.
We knelt in thanks and prayed to have a boy.
I longed to hold her near, her love to keep.
We floated high with joy, then fell asleep;
Next day we shopped and bought our child his toys.

But sickness struck; we rushed into the clinic.
The doctor spoke the words that broke our sun:
Our little boy was gone. We wept till tears were done.
They said we could try again, should not grow cynic.
We tried once more—my wife gave us a son.
Joy bloomed again. The darkness came undone.
