Sestina 6 – Fragments of Forever

The room is emptied of light,
shadows stretch like endless oceans.
I count the silent hours,
each one a ghost of love.
I thought we would endure forever,
but absence erodes devotion.

Still I cling to devotion,
though it flickers without light.
Promises once sworn forever
dissolve like salt in oceans.
I weigh my grief in love,
and sorrow lengthens the hours.

The clock refuses the hours,
mocking my fading devotion.
I ache for the warmth of love,
but the walls return no light.
Memories surge like oceans,
whispering we were forever.

Yet nothing truly lasts forever
not even the patient hours,
not even the tireless oceans,
not even steadfast devotion.
Darkness devours the light,
and silence swallows love.

I wander through ruins of love,
searching for fragments of forever.
I stumble through failing light,
lost in the labyrinth of hours.
My hands tremble with devotion,
yet they grasp only oceans.

The heart is heavier than oceans,
too fragile to cradle love.
Even the strongest devotion
thins beneath the weight of hours.
Nothing endures forever.
The world forgets its light.

If devotion could endure forever,
if love could outshine oceans,
then the broken hours might return with light.
