Villanelle 16 – When God Turned Away

It was God’s own country; His children dwelt there.
The land was abundant—soil, water, and air.
God abandoned the land, ignoring the people’s prayer.

Fields bloomed with plenty, a harvest to share.
The people lived gently; His smile lit the air.
It was God’s own country; His children dwelt there.

But slowly the devil’s disciples laid snare,
They plundered the riches with greed laid bare.
God abandoned the land, ignoring the people’s prayer.

They ravaged the forests, left landscapes stripped bare,
They slaughtered creation as if killing a dove.
It was God’s own country; His children dwelt there.

The rulers grew ruthless, their justice unfair,
They silenced all voices with iron fist’s shove.
God abandoned the land, ignoring the people’s prayer.

The helpless departed, their hearts full of despair;
The rest were expelled by the tyrants above.
It was God’s own country; His children dwelt there.
God abandoned the land, ignoring the people’s prayer.
