Sestina 8 – Secrets Beneath the Surface

The mind is an ocean.
The ocean has its own mind.
The mind hides secrets in its depths,
a documentary of a lifetime.
In its depths, the ocean also keeps secrets
things lost and sunk over the years.

It has been many long years,
since I traveled in a ship over the ocean.
My fear of sailing is one of my secrets.
It has been burning like embers in my mind,
And it may last a lifetime
as deep as the ocean’s depths.

In my mind a secret is buried in its depths.
It has been there for many fearful years.
I lived with it almost my entire lifetime.
I was afraid of the vast and endless ocean.
I cannot travel in a ship, for peace will leave my mind.
Someday I will reveal my deepest secrets.

I have never told anyone these secrets
about the fear of the sea and its depths.
I once fell from a ship, and that is in my mind.
I almost died, and that image remains vivid after all these years.
I prefer flying to sailing across the ocean.
I don’t know if I can outlive this fear in my lifetime.

I own a fleet of ships amassed over a lifetime.
Even though I made my fortune at sea, no one knows my secrets.
I own cruise ships and tankers that travel the ocean.
I have a company that searches for treasures in the ocean’s depths.
We have been in this business for many years,
and have recovered treasures that astonish the mind.

I know that my fear of the sea is a trick of my mind.
But it is a trick my mind has played all my lifetime.
I know I should cast it off after these years.
A businessman dealing with ships cannot harbor such secrets.
The fear of sailing has not harmed my business, but the depths
still make me tremble when crossing the ocean.

My mind is a vault full of secrets.
I must open it in this lifetime and embrace the depths.
In the coming years, I must cast off my fear of the ocean.
