Villanelle 5 – Sweet Burden

I strolled through my garden at dawn’s first light,
Bees hummed, butterflies danced on petals bright,
I loved my garden and its sweet delight.

Tools needed sharpening, edges keen and tight,
Goldfish flashed in the pond, scales agleam in flight,
I strolled through my garden at dawn’s first light.

Pool water murked with silt, weeds choked the site,
Lawn battled back, green warriors in fight,
I loved my garden and its sweet delight.

Paths heartened my soul, eased worry’s bite,
Dreamed of a mango tree towering high,
I strolled through my garden at dawn’s first light.

All this beauty I’d gift to my godson bright,
Shrubs trimmed like mini-towers, neat and spright,
I loved my garden and its sweet delight.

Tartan of blooms and earth, scents earthy, right,
Ours alone—buzz, ripple, colors unite,
I strolled through my garden at dawn’s first light.
I loved my garden and its sweet delight.
