Villanelle 7 – Cycles of Care

Rake the soil, add manure and pour water,
The plants will grow strong and flower faster,
Pull out the weeds, mulch, and soil will prosper.

Take good care of the plants so they don’t falter,
Plant in small pots the seeds given by the pastor,
Rake the soil, add manure and pour water.

The seeds germinate, the saplings grow taller,
The pastor was glad to see them prosper,
Pull out the weeds, mulch, and soil will prosper.

Transfer small plants to a large pan by the potter,
Watch the plants so they don’t become cow’s fodder,
Rake the soil, add manure and pour water.

Keep the pests at bay, drive them off with ardor,
The healthy plants thrive when the days grow hotter,
Pull out the weeds, mulch, and soil will prosper.

When the flowers blossom, become their watcher,
Guard them from thieves who come when it’s darker,
Rake the soil, add manure and pour water,
Pull out the weeds, mulch, and soil will prosper.
