Villanelle 9 – The Schoolyard Rule

In school I quickly gained a dearest friend,
I was a boy, and she a girl,
I found a new girlfriend, as hearts would bend.

Beautiful were the hours we’d together spend,
She was radiant, her hair a curl,
In school I quickly gained a dearest friend.

For her, many school rules I would bend,
And when I did, her joy would unfurl,
I found a new girlfriend, as hearts would bend.

Sometimes we fought, but always we would mend,
Each quarrel deepened love’s bright swirl,
In school I quickly gained a dearest friend.

She stood her ground, her spirit could defend,
One day she wore a necklace made of pearl,
I found a new girlfriend, as hearts would bend.

Another day, small treasures she would vend,
When none were bought, she cast them in a whirl,
In school I quickly gained a dearest friend,
I found a new girlfriend, as hearts would bend.
