Dawn’s Deliberate Dance

I awoke when the alarm shouted at five,
But stayed in bed for my ‘me’ time.
I reflected on the previous day’s events,
And planned the coming hours and contents.
I finally rose when the cuckoo chimed six times.

I brushed my teeth and brewed black coffee,
Sweet as a secret and hot as the sun.
I sipped it while scanning the newspaper,
Then walked the garden to loosen my limbs.
Under the morning rays,
Bees and sunbirds drank nectar,
While bulbuls and sparrows stole the fruits.
Two tailor birds stitched leaves into a nest,
Above a flurry of activity in the koi pond.
I threw them two large scoops of feed.
They gulped it shamelessly, begging for more.
I obliged, tossing a handful before going in.

Freshly showered, I donned my innerwear,
Pulled on white socks and black trousers,
And introduced my feet to the Oxfords.
I buttoned my shirt—white with blue vertical lines—
Tucked it in and fastened the belt’s golden buckle.
Next, the tie: deep blue with white horizontal stripes,
And my watch: an Omega with a maroon leather strap.
Finally, the suit—black, to complement the rest.

Breakfast was egg on toast, avocado, and ABC juice.
I grabbed the keys, kissed my wife, and said, “I love you.”
The car roared to life, the powerful engine growling.
I shifted into Drive and the wheels began rolling.
Energized, I went forth to face the day’s challenges.
