Moonbird

I was a male Rufa Red Knot,
the most famous of my kind.
They called me Moonbird.

Tagged with an orange leg band—
code B95, 1995.
Moonbird, for my lifetime flights:
20,000 miles each year,
Arctic breeding grounds to
South American winters.

More than 400,000 miles total—
1.7 times the Earth-to-Moon distance.

My kin last six or seven years.
I reached twenty-one.

A celebrity, yet
no one found my body or
gave me a proper burial.
