The Sun

Today I woke up early.
I stood facing east.
The sun entered my body
through my feet.
It rose through me slowly,
its warmth soothing
my feet, calves, and thighs.
My circulation quickened.
It eased the heaviness in my veins.
It climbed higher,
dissolving hidden stones,
lightening my liver.
It warmed my heart
and filled it with happiness.
It entered my head,
and hundreds of poems and stories
emerged from my brain.
It reached my mouth—
sweet as honey.
It flowed outward
through my open lips.
I closed my mouth and swallowed it.
Suddenly there was darkness,
as if someone had switched off
the bedroom lamp before sleep.
