Villanelle 3 – Left on the Road

I should not have ridden out that night
To ride a bike by day is still unsafe,
Riding it at night is danger’s bite.

The wise resist the lure, avoid the plight,
Though loss of freedom feels a bitter chafe,
I should not have ridden out that night.

I saw the stars in sudden, fleeting flight,
My friend had warned me of the risk, unsafe,
Riding it at night is danger’s bite.

The car appeared, its headlights sharp and bright,
It struck me down, my body left a waif,
I should not have ridden out that night.

The sirens wailed, the stretcher bound me tight,
I thought of death, of fate’s unyielding strafe,
Riding it at night is danger’s bite.

Now memory haunts with shadow, endless blight,
No freedom worth the price that danger gave—
I should not have ridden out that night,
Riding it at night is danger’s bite.
