What we are is shaped by many factors. Our character, to a certain extent, is determined even before we are born. Genetics plays a vital role in how we look, how intelligent we are, our temperament, and who we will become. Some of us are born with exceptionally high intelligence quotient (IQ) and emotional quotient (EQ). Others are endowed with excellent people skills, athletic bodies, musical talents, writing abilities, or brilliant minds that help us excel academically.
Some aspects of our character and potential are decided by our gene pool even before we are born. However, we need to polish those innate abilities through dedicated practice and continuous improvement. Consider soccer players like Pele, Messi, and Ronaldo, who practiced relentlessly until they became polished gems and, ultimately, legends of their sport.
After genetic makeup, the next major factor influencing our character and skills is family. Does our family provide a stable, loving environment where we can develop our latent talents? Does it offer nutritious food to support healthy growth? Does it nurture the social skills we need to navigate life successfully? A supportive family lays a strong foundation for our skill development. For example, Messi’s father enrolled him at the local club Grandoli when he was four years old and coached him, while his maternal grandmother accompanied him to training and matches. This early start gave Messi an advantage. There are exceptions, however. Cristiano Ronaldo faced significant hardships during his childhood and early teens but emerged successfully through sheer determination and exceptional talent.
Beyond family, society plays a crucial role in shaping us. Growing up among people who teach good values, offer encouragement, and model hard work helps us develop into citizens who value honesty, kindness, empathy, and integrity. The role of society in forming our character cannot be overstated. Consider Nelson Mandela, who lost his father at a young age and was raised as a ward. The tribal community and educational institutions that took him in provided education and opportunities that eventually led to his becoming president of South Africa and a global icon for human rights.
Our peers also have a tremendous impact on us. The term “peer pressure” emerged to describe how significantly friends influence our lives. Good friends reduce the likelihood of self-destructive behavior, while negative influences can lead us toward drugs, violence, and other harmful activities. Choosing our friends wisely is crucial for success, as they play a vital role in shaping our path.
This brings us to education, which is critical for long-term success. While some achieve greatness in sports through talent and dedication alone, education enhances our opportunities and success. Even highly successful athletes benefit from learning. Cristiano Ronaldo, for instance, learned Spanish, English, and Italian through immersion and determination—skills that enhanced his global career beyond the field.
As we grow, life brings us successes, failures, traumas, changes, and encounters with people who influence our trajectory. Failure teaches us valuable lessons if we remain open to learning. A catastrophe that leaves us bedridden or wheelchair-bound can completely transform our lives. Whether we respond positively or negatively, whether we adapt and move forward or wallow in self-pity, determines our future. The support of our family and friends becomes essential during such challenges.
As we age, we accumulate knowledge, diverse experiences, and opportunities that help us evolve intellectually and emotionally. When our experience combines with intelligence, we become wise. Wisdom cannot be acquired simply through reading books—knowledge and wisdom are distinct. The more we live and experience, the more refined our wisdom becomes. This is why we should respect elder wisdom, as they have learned life’s lessons the hard way: through experience.
